Today I’m here with my friend Rachel Gonzales talking about raising a transgender child.
Equality Texas Education and Resource Coordinator Rachel Gonzales has testified several times at the Texas Capitol, spoken at rallies and protests, and has maintained a local to national media presence in the fight for equality for transgender Texans. As the mother of a transgender child, equality for LGBTQ youth is her passion. She is delighted to be able to combine her passion with her background in cultural applied anthropology to advocate for the equal treatment of LGBTQ youth, providing support for families to be their own best advocates. She is an active member of Dallas-Fort Worth Trans Kids and Families (DFWTKF) and a member of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) National Parents for Transgender Equality Council.
Adventure of the Week
This week I talk about our adventure at KEXP and the rambunctious fun that was had by all.
Gender: We discuss what gender is and what it means to be transgender.
Story: Rachel shares her story of affirming her child’s gender identity and the struggles they moved through.
Grief: We touch on the initial period of grief that many parents move through as they learn more about what it means for their child to be transgender, how gentle parenting makes this process easier, and how we process the fears we have for our children.
Interventions: We cover the social transition of childhood and the options for medical transition in adolescence.
Team: We talk about what helping professionals we have invited onto our teams and how we chose them.
Ally: Listen to how you can help by becoming an ally for transyouth.
I posted in my Sage Parenting Tribe on Facebook that we were going to chat about raising a transgender child and asked if they had any questions about it. Several questions had the same theme, which was, “When does gender creativity cross into transgender? How do we know for sure? What if they change their minds?”
